Kakching is a popular town located in the Thoubal district in Manipur. The town is located in the southeastern region of Manipur. Kakching is second largest town in the district and also it serves as the sub divisional headquarters of kakching sub division. Kakching is also referred to as the granary of Manipur. Kakching is also known as the granary of Manipur, due to its output of paddy. The town is also an important commercial hub in the state of Manipur.

Geography of Kakching

The town is located in the southern part of Imphal valley at an average altitude of 2545 feet above sea level. It lies between 24.48^oN latitude and 93.98^oE longitude. Kakching is about 44 km from Imphal and 70 km from the border of India with Burma. The Sekmal River runs through the town. Sekmal River is one of the major rivers in Manipur and it flows northwards and provides water in and around the town and also to the cultivation areas.

Economy of Kakching

The main occupation of the people here is agriculture and business. The farmers here practice double cropping due to the availability of proper canal and irrigation facilities. The major crops produces here are pulses, rice, potatoes and cereal. The State and Central government also finances number of small scale industries in the town. The handicraft and handloom products are sold in the Kakching Market.

As of 2011 India census, the population of the city of Kakching is 32,138 out of which 15,710 are males and 16,428 are females. The average literacy rate of the people here is 78%. The official language of Kakching is Meiteilon (Manipuri).

The park is also the home of rich flora and fauna. There is also a large ancient temple of to Lord Shiva inside the park. The fountain in the park is named after a legendary Haoreibi Shampubi. Kakching Lake

It is another popular tourist place in Kakching. There are 100,000 pieces of indigenous fish "Pengba" and also other varieties of fishes have been farmed in this lake. The Government of Manipur in order to promote tourism has also made angling facilities available in the lake.

How to Reach Kakching

Kakching is connected by AH-1 with Thoubal town and Moreh town. There town is also connected by an inter-district road with chandel district headquarters.

By Air
Kakching has no airports and the nearest air link is the Tulihal Airport located about 46 km away in Imphal. There are regular flight services to all major destinations of the country from the airport. One can hire cab or buses to reach the city.

By Rail
There is no railway line in Kakching and the nearest rail head is the Dimapur Railway Station in Nagaland about 255 km from Kakching. Jiribam has a narrow guage. It is located about 256 kms from Kakching.

By Road
Kakching can be easily reached from Imphal though roadways. There are regular taxi and bus servives from the Imphal to Kakching. The major cities of Manipur are connected to Kakching by the district roads. National Highway 102 runs through Kakching and connects all the major cities like Thoubal, Tengnoupal, Palel, Imphal, Khangabok and Moreh.
